BETRAYAL

Jerry Sandusky was privileged to work at one of the outstanding football programs in America: the legendary Penn State.

Jerry Sandusky was privileged to work for one of the outstanding college football coaches in America: the legendary Joe Paterno.

Jerry Sandusky used his access to Penn State and to Joe Paterno to create a great charity to help young people. He enjoyed his reputation as a wonderful man acting on charitable impulses and doing good works.

Then Jerry Sandusky began violating the young boys who came to his charity for encouragement, help and a future.

Jerry Sandusky dishonored his employer: Penn State University.

Jerry Sandusky dishonored his boss and great friend: Joe Paterno

But most importantly, Jerry Sandusky betrayed the young people who trusted in him.

Jerry Sandusky has an opportunity to take one step in the right direction. He should admit his crime and do his time. He should plead guilty and end the public spectacle of the trial.

It is too late for him to free his victims from having to tell their sordid and embarrassing stories in front of a jury as they have already done this. In order to continue with the trial he must expose the jury, and all of us, to an argument none of us will accept. That argument is that there is some acceptable reason for what he did.

Is Penn State innocent in this matter?  I think not.

Is Joe Paterno innocent in this matter? I think not.

Is the small town that turned a deaf ear to the ongoing pedophilia in it’s midst innocent in this matter? I think not.

The innocents here are the young boys whose dreams were shattered by Jerry Sandusky.

Penn State will recover.

The reputation of Joe Paterno will recover.

These boys will never be free of the betrayal that took place in service to the almighty football reputation of a single American university.
